Quasi
Sam Coomes
Janet Weiss
Quasi was formed in Portland OR in '93 by Sam Coomes & Janet Weiss. Their first album was self released in '95. They released three albums between '97 & '99 on Up Records. They moved to Touch & Go Records in '01 & have released three albums with them thus far, & additionally T&G reissued the first album. Quasi albums are licenced by Domino Records in Europe & P-Vine Records in Japan. Throughout this time they have also toured &/or recorded either individually or collectively with Sleater-Kinney, Elliott Smith, Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks, Built to Spill, Bright Eyes, Heatmiser, the Go Betweens, Pink Mountain, Blues Goblins,The Takeovers, Jandek, numerous other less recognizeable names. Prior to to Quasi, SC was in the San Francisco band Donner Party (c.'83-'88) & both SC & JW were in the Portland power trio Motorgoat (c.'90-'92). Joanna Bolme (Jicks, The Minders, Calamity Jane) joined the band in c.'06. In late 2011 Quasi went back to being a two-piece, Sam and Janet. Look for a new record sometime in the future.
Quasi is an American indie rock band formed in Portland, Oregon in 1993 by ex-husband and wife Sam Coomes (vocals, guitar, Rocksichord, various keyboards) and Janet Weiss (vocals and drums). Joanna Bolme performed and recorded with the group as a bassist from 2007 to 2011.
In 1990, Sam Coomes, Janet Weiss, and Brad Pedinov formed the band Motorgoat. The band released two self-released cassettes and one 7" single before dissolving in 1993. Coomes and Weiss then began recording as a duo in 1993 under the name Quasi.
Although Coomes and Weiss remain busy with other bands, Quasi tours fairly regularly. In 2007, they toured the U.S. with Touch & Go labelmates Ted Leo and the Pharmacists. Just prior to that tour, Quasi announced that bassist Joanna Bolme, who had toured with Quasi in 2006 and plays with Weiss in Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, was a permanent member of the band. Bolme performed on Quasi's 2010 full-length American Gong and continued to tour with them through the first half of 2011. In June 2011, Quasi posted an update on their official Facebook page, announcing that they would be returning to their original two-piece lineup for "the foreseeable future" and thanking Bolme for her time with the band.
In addition to her work in the Jicks, Weiss was the primary drummer for the group Sleater-Kinney, and has recently played with Bright Eyes, John Doe and Wild Flag, while Coomes has been working with Pink Mountain and on his solo project, Blues Goblins. He has also played with Jandek, and has appeared on several Built to Spill albums. According to a recent post on their website, Coomes stated they are beginning to work on new material following the end of touring.
Quasi has been somewhat political since its inception, but their opposition to the 2003 Invasion of Iraq showed through in a straightforward way with the release of Hot Shit! in 2003, particularly in the songs "White Devil's Dream" and "Master and Dog."

Blues Control
Lea Cho, Russ Waterhouse
from Queens, NY

Blues Control are not a pop band (far from it, in fact), and they don't seem especially concerned about hooks or melody. While the four songs on Local Flavor-- which strung together, comprise one gradually expanding instrumental piece-- may not find much of an audience outside of committed fans of noise and drone, the album's grainy assemblage of submerged mood music could represent a welcome addition to the latter's record collection.
Unlike most of their peers operating in some form of lo-fi punk, Blues Control have their sights on a more expansive sound, a kind of homespun blend of instrumental, machine-tinged psychedelic rock. Though stylistically dissimilar, they do share these acts' affinity for stripped-down, hissy sonics, making the band a sensible fit at boutique noise-pop imprint Siltbreeze. Local Flavor, their second full-length and first for the label, is an ambitious offering, a half-hour ride through murky textures built from electronics and traditional instrumentation.
Though they succeed in sketching these gloomy portraits, there's a detachment about these songs that feels at odds with their other aim, which is creating a feeling of druggy ambience.

Street Eaters
Megan March and Johnny Geek
A cup of punk, a dash of riot grrl, and a heaping helping of smarts make Street Eaters a band you should definitely know about.

Street Eaters (Megan March and John No) live in the Berkeley/Oakland area. They tour and perform a lot, playing with the likes of Big Eyes, Neon Piss, Shellshag, Screaming Females, Forgetters, and other mutual badasses. Megan plays the drums and sings, John plays the bass and sings. There is no one else in the band, and there won't be in the future.
