As the sport of skateboarding became increasingly popular, they became favorites in the West Coast scene, despire their roots in Philly. In 1982, shortlyer after skater Chuck Treece became sponsored, he formed the hardcore punk group McRad with fellow skater Zeke Zagar. The skate world and the band's thrashing music intersected with the band's first LP, Absence of Sanity. After a massively successful run providing music to incredibly popular skate videos, the band began to devolve with the decline of Treece's skating career. After a stint of studio sessions and solo projects, the band came back with a vengeance in 2007, and have been thrashing across the United States ever since. Drunk Injuns Restless Spirit, Johnny Yuma, Wholley Smokes, Stoned Wolf, and Sitting Duck. -From San Francisco, California. -The band members are really just regular guys, until they are need to play. Then, the ghost warrior spirit entities are called upon, and possess them just prior to their stage entrance. These ancients convey their mystic messages and speak to the center of the audience's souls. The masks are a conduit for channeling these spirits, with the consciousness of the band contained within. These progenitors of skate rock perform as a dual entity with dual purpose, and the result is an astounding and powerful torrent of mystic skating power. Free Beer Mike Cassidy, Dan Magee, Tony Guerrero, Tommy Guerrero, and Steve Tatum. -From the Bay Area, California. -Free Beer was brewed in December of 1981. The band was the idea of a young Bay Area brewmaster that mixed together the hops and ashes of two of the then-youngest SF punk bands on the underground scene. The ingredients consisted of 3/5ths Revenge, 1/5th A.L.A., and 1/5th Innocent Bystander. Sure, the band's name was a brilliant way to drive traffic to their gigs, but more importantly, Free Beer's onstage antics never fell short of delivering the goods, which made this band an integral part of San Francisco's underground punk scene. A genuine effort by skaters who just wanted to make music that you can skate to, they rail against all the barriers the world can put up against their way of life. It's aggressive rock that set the foundation for the West Coast skate rock movement, and does so with as much vigor, experience, and sincerity as you can want. Motorhome Mike Baptista, Rob Vastano, Matt D., Bryan Coons, and Tim Curry. -From San Francisco, California. -Motorhome fired up their loud brand of rock in 2002. Bred from a desire to fuse the different styles of their classic rock and metal influences, they came together to kick out the monster sounds of yesteryear, guaranteed to scare the living daylights out of mall punks and make aging hipsters put down their drink and take notice. This mentality has built Motorhome a loyal fan base wherever they go. |
