Track Star
-Hey, is there a name for that approach that's sort of like minimalism but not really minimalist? Like, your conventional pop material is there, except that's all there is-- everything is stripped back to clean, functional lines, like a more elaborate version of a Mondrian painting. Is there a term for that? Because that's what Track Star do.
You might know Track Star's Wyatt Cusick from indie-pop darlings the Aislers Set, whose The Last March he played bass and sang a couple songs on. Track Star is sort of 'his' project, and they don't sound a whole lot like the Aislers: less frilly, less twee, and they don't go for the Byrdsy "San Francisco sound" the Aislers do. If they sound like anyone from the area it's Imperial Teen, who use the same trick-warm guitars, songs clicking or jangling along on just a few chords, every melody very deliberately meant as a hook, mood going from bratty to precious by turns. Imperial Teen do it more flashily and interestingly, but the odd thing about Track Star is that it's precisely their lack of being interesting that makes them charming.
-San Francisco's favorite sons, Track Star, performed together for over 10 years and in that time released two outstanding full length albums and an army of singles (and a 10"!). From masterfully crafted indie pop songs to crushing rock anthems, from 35 minute epic loops to their dry witted live shows, Track Star won out on whatever they put their minds to.
While their first full length record "Communication Breaks" [Sub Pop/Die Young Stay Pretty] brought them to the forefront of the mid 90's SF indie scene the band had a sizable collection of vinyl records under their belts: "No Big Deal/Push It" [Kick Down Records], "Cashed Out/August" split 7" with Kid Dynamo [Chocolate River (deconstructions) Records] and the classic "Sometimes, What's The Difference?" 10" [Silver Girl Records].
Track Star toured the US several times over before setting down to begin the follow up to "Communication Breaks". In the meantime the band produced new singles: "Removable Parts/The View From Space" [Suicide Squeeze] and "The Chord/Green To Gold" [Omnibus]. Finally after a long hiatus "Lion Destroyed The Whole World" [Better Looking Records/Turn Records] was release and a national tour with The Shins would be the last time the threesome would pile in the van.
The band played together one final time, headlining the Turn Records 5 Year Anniversary show. It may be the last of Track Star, it may not as all three remain good friends and continue to play/perform music.
Wyatt is also in The Aisler's Set, Brian plays in The Stones & Still Flyin' and Matthew has since formed Calling All Monsters, who's debut record, The Traps That Work Best, is out now on Turn Records.

Kids On A Crime Spree
Mario Hernandez
Bill Evans
Becky Barron
-from Oakland, California.
-About a decade ago, Californian Mario Hernandez (of Ciao Bella and From Bubblegum to Sky) was sitting on a Stockholm couch, casually drinking a really good cup of coffee when a friend put on the Back to Mono box set and Hernandez’s life was forever changed. He was instantly drawn in by the excellent songwriting and lush instrumental arrangements; and what started out as an innocent side trip into the Phil Spector back catalog soon became a longtime fascination with the Brill Building and Spector’s fabled wall of sound. As time passed, he kept coming back to the idea of a simple pop song that wasn’t really that simple—a happy melody with a dark underpinning in the lyrics—and he knew that it wasn’t enough to just listen. He had to make his own version of this great stuff. Kids on a Crime Spree is the result of this obsession. After living in New York for a spell to more fully immerse himself in the culture that spawned the music he loved, Hernandez moved back to California and began recording in earnest. Of the more than one hundred songs he composed but was not able to record while in New York, eight of the best were chosen for We Love You So Bad, Kids on a Crime Spree’s first record. Much care was taken to use older recording techniques akin to those used in the ’60s in the Brill Building, and the whole record was captured on analog tape. As recording progressed, Hernandez brought in friends to help and to recreate his songs in a live setting. Key to the Kids on a Crime Spree sound is the simple yet driving drumming of Becky Barron (#Poundsign#, Scrabbel, From Bubblegum to Sky) and the perpetually drenched-in-reverb guitar of Bill Evans (From Bubblegum To Sky).

-San Francisco's "jangle darlings" are reminiscent the mid-to late 80's C86 and SARAH sound, they have also been compared to 4AD's hazy early 90's catalog.
