Japanese Butoh Dancers
 with VJ Digital Introspect

-Butoh (舞踏) is the name given to a variety of performance practices that emerged around the middle of the XXth century in Japan.
For the general audience, it appears as a type of dance or silent theater which displays extreme visual images created by skinny, white painted dancers. This popular image has spread around the world thanks to the numerous shows given by some of its most famous companies.
Though, butoh aesthetics are much wider and its practice is more than just a new choreographic and visual trend, discovered and developed by the Japanese modern artists.
Butoh
It has been described as the search for a representation of the body that would be free of cultural references and open to all metamorphosis. This presupposes the existence of a natural state of humanity (as opposed to culturally determined) that could be reached and expressed with movement and that would lead to a wide variety of aesthetic results.
Their search for that primary state of humanity, together with their reaction against the contemporary dance scene in Japan (which Hijikata feels is based on imitating the West and the Noh) leads to some of butoh’s common features:

-Use of taboo topics: death, eroticism, sex and mobilization of archaic pulsations.
-Extreme or absurd environments.
-Slow hyper-controlled motion.
-Almost nude bodies completely painted in white.
-Upward rolled eyes and contorted face.
-Inward rotated legs and feet.
-Fetal positions.
-Playful and grotesque imagery.
-Performed with or without an audience.
-No set style: “There are as many types of butoh as there are butoh choreographers.” (Hijikata).
-It may be purely conceptual with no movement at all.
- Aesthetical features that go against the western archetypes of perfection and beauty.
- Its technique uses some acquisitions from the traditional Japanese knowledge, like the control of energy, which translates into an insistent rhythm (close to Nô Theater) and strong expressivity.

DJ Matt The Katt

 DJ
-Matt The Katt is matthew sebastian kroll, san francisco musician, dj, and electronic music producer.
a graduate of the university of california santa cruz electronic music studios, matt the katt has been into music since childhood, playing guitar and bass in a psychedelic funk rock party band during college, and later falling in love with electronic music during a 2007 study abroad program in berlin, where he witnessed mind-melting shows at small clubs by busy p, justice, mstrkrft, modeselektor, and more.

although certifiably a whiteboy, matt the katt has developed a lifelong obsession with funk music, and yet at the same time cannot resist the raw power and endless possibilities of synthesizers.

while certainly not a virtuoso on any instrument, matt the katt gets down on guitar, bass, keyboards, drum kit, hand drums / percussion, and can rap goofy vocals while triggering loops and samples.

with a lot of jamming with friends, a lot of experimentation, a lot of wet synths, wah-wah guitar, slap bass, vocoding, and hand claps (to name a few of matt's favorite musical elements) an electrofunk-techhouse-nudisco-breakbeat-chillout sound is usually the result of most matt the katt productions.

the katt likes to blend house with funk and electro with r&b, and sauteé its all till it stank, …till its bonafide funky.

with maximum booty-shaking as the goal, the katt aims to serve up deep, vintage funk grooves interlaced with modern electronica.

the katt's mission is simple:  create groove-centric electronica that reminds you of the cool days of the ‘70s and '80's -  a time when funk was the answer to all life’s problems.

musician, producer, dj, and live performer, matt the katt primarily uses Logic (for production), Ableton (for djing and live performance).  A solo artist, one half of San Francisco house/nu disco dj outfit EEZUVSTEEZ ("ease of steeze"), and one half of live electro/funk/rock duo, Grimin' & Gnarfunkl, matt the matt keeps busy gigging around San Francisco and the Bay, recording, producing, making mixtapes, and chillaxing fat.
