Mutoid Man
Steve Brodsky, Ben Koller, Nick Cageao
-from New York, NY
Mutoid Man is an American metal band formed February 4, 2012 in Brooklyn, NY by vocalist/guitarist Stephen Brodsky and drummer Ben Koller. Their music is a high energy blend of progressive riffs with elements of psychedelic rock, sludge metal, and stoner metal. They released their debut EP Helium Head through Magic Bullet on November 29, 2013. Brodsky also recorded bass tracks for the EP while Nick Cageao (live sound engineer, formerly of Bröhammer) played live bass. They signed to Sargent House in 2014 and released their debut full-length album Bleeder in June 2015. Cageao has since become a core member of the band as he wrote and played on Bleeder.

Stephen Brodsky has been the vocalist and guitarist of Cave In since its formation in 1995 and Ben Koller has been the drummer of Converge since 1999. Both members have also played in each of those bands at some point; Brodsky was Converge’s bassist from 1997 to 1998 and Koller was Cave In’s drummer from 2005 to 2006.

Wild Throne
Joshua Holland, Noah Burns, Jeff Johnson
-from Bellingham, Wash.

Upon first encountering Wild Throne, it would be easy to make certain assumptions about them based simply on their demeanor. They’re polite and certainly friendly, but a little unassuming, exhibiting that brand of reserve particular to the Pacific Northwest. Given that, and the fact that they hail from Bellingham, an especially cold and wet corner of Washington state, you might be tempted to draw conclusions about what their music sounds like: definitely heavy, probably sludgey, possibly full of the gloom and doom that often characterizes bands that live under heavy cloud cover nine months of the year. If that’s the case, you’re in for quite a surprise.

Wild Throne is a band that has become accustomed to surprising people—both by accident and by design—simply by crafting music that is as hard to describe as it is exciting to listen to. They’ve managed to take the volume and brutality of heavy metal, compositional elements of prog rock, atypical time signatures of math rock, along with things not normally found in those genres such as strong melodies, a touch of psychedelia and some old-fashioned, straight-ahead rock ’n’ roll, along with impeccable musicianship and extraordinary vision, and meld them into a big, multi-layered, many-faceted sound that is completely their own.

He Whose Ox Is Gored
Lisa Mungo, Brian McClelland, John O'Connell, Mike Sparks
-from Seattle, WA

The Pacific Northwest has long been a stronghold for great heavy metal, and Seattle's He Whose Ox Is Gored is one of the region's best kept secrets. The band combines aspects of shoegaze, doom metal, and post-rock to make a hearty stew of delicious post-everything heavy metal. No doubt some of you reading this are the kind of troo metal lunkheads who recoil at even the slightest hint of experimentation, but if you philistines give the band a chance you might discover something new to enjoy.
