-HEART OF THE WHALE is a San Francisco based rock and roll band. The band is heavily influenced by artists such as Brian Eno and the books of Philip K. Dick.

Night Genes
Eric Ingersoll, Dan Baber, Hannah Skelton, David MacFadden-Elliott (contributor)
-from Boise, ID/SAan Francisco, CA
-Night Genes is the musical brainchild of Eric Ingersoll, who started the project in his hometown, Boise,
Idaho, a city that invokes the Old West as it informs the folkloric qualities of his material. Ingersoll took
his notebook and pen on the road as he translated England’s rainy summer days, China’s crowded city
streets and a move to San Francisco into dark, folky songs that engender a rawness and edge. Bold
baritone vocals are complicated by simple yet majestic musical arrangements, an unexpected playfulness,
and even a pop-sensibility.

The band’s first album, Two Phantoms & A Holy Ghost (self-released in Fall 2009) was well-received by fans and critics. It was a meditative, weighty, but hopeful group of songs featuring reflections on our apparent, or sometimes not so apparent, mortality.

The new album, Like the Blood, moves past mortality into rebirth, inquiring into the idea of evolution and progress from one generation to the next. Is each generation’s progress real? Is our perceived evolution helping or actually hindering us? Does any of it even matter, or does senselessness carries just as much weight as the meaningful?

Sonically, these songs are a bit like the musical version of an Old Fashioned with rabbit-shaped ice cubes. Many of the tracks were recorded with a $100 Sears guitar from the early 1960s. David MacFadden-Elliott (keyboards/percussion/samples) has introduced compelling electronic elements and beats with his sampler. Amy Foote (vocals/keyboards) soars through each track with dancing, effortless melodies. The result is that Like the Blood finds Night Genes at its best; braver, more fun, and more elemental than ever before.-
