Indeed, San Francisco’s indie rock/soul darlings have been coolly holding down their unabashed brand of sweaty, sexy, 70s rock & roll with a quiet determination and an eye on the prize since 2008. Visions of Janis Joplin and Stevie Nicks have been rumoured to dance in heads as frontwoman Tracey Holland casts hypnotic spells from her vocal cords and swiveling, Elvis-style hips, both a compelling frontwoman and a monster vocalist, whose voice has been described thusly: “…see vocalist Tracey Holland sing — she has an absolutely amazing voice that has to be seen to be believed.” [Death & Taxes] Sharing vocal and fronting duties with Holland is guitarist Chris Tye, who plays off and around Holland’s vocals with bold, swaggering riffs, borne of a nuanced chemistry that exists between the two evocative of that intangible quality of all great duos. You can’t quite put your finger on it, but you know it when you see it. We Arsons Mike Ballan- vocals, guitar, harmonica, Tim Vickers- bass, Rob Mills- drums, percussion, Greg Harty- vocals, keys -from San Francisco, CA -We Arsons is an alternative folk four piece from San Francisco featuring Mike Ballan on vocals and acoustic guitar, Tim Vickers on double bass, Rob Mills on drums, and Gregory Harty on vocals and keys. The band is comprised of completely acoustic instruments, allowing the group to play a wide range of venues, from concert halls to subway tunnels. The music itself is a range: warm and resonant, soft and quiet at times; chaotic, powerful and raw at others, building speed and energy not usually associated with acoustic acts. Intricately intertwining melodies and complex, surrealistic lyrics blend together and play with the listener’s ear. The band shares a deep love for the 90s and considers We Arsons to be a unique fusion of alternative rock and folk. Jeremy Lyon of Tumbleweed Wanderers Jeremy Lyon -from Oakland, CA -Busking outside of countless Bay Area venues, Tumbleweed Wanderers took stage on the streets of San Francisco in 2011 with the hopes of simply sharing their music. In just two short years, through pure stubborn persistence the band went on to headline the venues they once busked outside of, and, in the process, released three EPs and their debut album, So Long, produced by John Vanderslice at his all analog studio Tiny Telephone. Along the way, their sound evolved from the early stomp-clap acoustic sets to electric rock explosions full of three part harmonies, ripping organ, and screaming guitar solos. |
