This genre-defying collective emerged from the 1977 British punk scene, where the mekons progressed from socialist art students with no musical skills to the prolific, raucous progeny of Hank Williams. Theirs is an improbable history – a surprising and influential embrace of folk and country music; with occasional forays into the art world (collaborations with Vito Acconci and Kathy Acker). The mekons continue to make bold, unpredictable music while staying true to the punk ethos. Their mind-boggling output consistently blurs the lines between high art and low and they remain one of the truly great live bands. Sam Coomes Sam Coomes -from Portland, OR -Sam Coomes is a musician/producer based in Cascadia. In addition to solo work, SC is also one half of the duo Quasi, with Janet Weiss (Sleater-Kinney). Quasi has released 9 full length albums over a twenty plus year existence, with labels such as Up, Touch & Go, & Kill Rock Stars in the U.S.A., Domino in Europe, & P-Vine and Hostess in Japan, and toured numerous times in said countries. Additionally, SC has recorded and/or toured with Built To Spill, Elliott Smith, Jandek, as well as in his own projects Crock (duo with Spencer Seim {Hella}), experimental post-prog collective Pink Mountain (not the Pink Mountaintops...unfortunate happenstance), and Blues Goblins, which is actually just a solo album of psychedelicized blues classics. Also, local good-time noise rock band Deep Fried Boogie Band. Also, scored several short experimental films by Vanessa Renwick (Oregon Dept. of Kick Ass). More recently, SC has been performing in a quartet with a rubber vulture, a styrofoam head, & a Conn min-o-matic. Sun Foot Ron Burns [Smog, Hot Spit Dancers, Swell], Chris Johanson [the painter, The Deep Throats, Tina Age 13], Brian Mumford [Dragging an Ox through Water, Jackie-O Motherfucker, Thicket, Jewelry Rash]) -from Portland, OR/Los Angeles, CA -Portland Los Angeles 3 piece who play low volume tunes through small amps and a drum set that consists of a hand drum, cymbal, pan lids, and electronic drum pad, all three singing, playing random cheap electronic keyboards maybe, and switching of instruments probably. Good to listen to if you are interested in the sun and tired of negativity. |
