CHAI
-from Nagoya, Japan
-We are CHAI.
When you think of all things Pink, a sound that fuses the likings of Basement Jaxx, the Gorillaz, CSS, and Tom Tom Club, with lyrics focused on “women empowerment” and re- defining the definition of “kawaii” or cute in Japanese, you think of CHAI.
Formed in 2012, in the Nagoya region of Japan, identical twins Mana (voc/keys) and Kana (gt./cho.) would ask fellow high school classmate, Yuna (dr./cho.), and later Yuki (ba./cho.), a college acquaintance, to join what we now know as CHAI.
Both independent releases, “Hottaraka Series” which translates to “irresponsible series”, was the title of CHAI’s 1st EP released in December of 2016, soon followed by “Homegoro Series”, their 2nd EP, released in April of the following year.
CHAI scored their first US performance at SXSW 2017, followed by a series of performance dates in New York, Chicago, Seattle, Portland, San Diego, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, a mini American tour titled “Japan Nite.”
After coming across CHAI’s irresistibly unique music video for “Boys・Seco・Men”,
featured on their 2nd EP “Homegoro Series”, US indie label, Burger Records reached out and CHAI was immediately included in their 2017, Burger World: Japan Compilation cassette, marking CHAI’s first official US release.

Hex
GG Van Newtown, Kiki Van Newtown, Jason Erskine
-from Wellington, New Zealand

-HEX is the progeny of wives Kiki and GG Van Newtown, who together harvest and bake together all their favourite elements from punk, folk, classical and metal. They align quick, incisive lyrics and rock opera levels of riffage to reflect the chaos approaching post-capitalism with fierceness and rapture. HEX is joined by Jason Erskine whose heavy drumming perfectly underpins their intricate guitar lines and dual vocals.

Since late 2015 HEX have performed regularly throughout New Zealand, and have played support for Dinosaur Jr., The Kills and Shonen Knife. For the last year HEX have torn up dance floors with their sharp anthemic performances, unspooling a "raw, unapologetic act that encompasses a mixture of folk, punk, metal and prog rock" (noisey.vice.com).

HEX's debut EP Calling to the Universe (May 2016) received massive support from the Student Radio Network (College Radio), with four of the five tracks leading the 95bFM Top Ten – NZ’s largest independent radio station.

In 2017 HEX released two singles and videos - 'Page of Pentacles' and ‘Runes / Ruins’, and made a bunch of new buddies on a ten date Australian tour which saw HEX playing with favourite Australian acts including Cable Ties, Two Steps On The Water, and Swim Team.

‘Page of Pentacles’ spent five weeks in the NZ Radioscope Alt Charts, and this “anthem for self-might and the power of rebellion” (hhhhappy.com) received airplay backed by interviews on FBi, Triple RRR, and 4ZZZ in Australia.

‘Runes / Runes’ was heralded as an “up-on-your-feet dancefloor tune [owed] to great songwriting and visceral, dynamic drumming” (rocknuts.net) and made it to number two on the Alt Charts, as well as earning a spot in the New Zealand Top 40.

Early in 2018, HEX are set to release their debut LP ‘The Hill Temple’ as well as another single and folk horror inspired video by renowned director Amber Beaton. They are also currently planning both a US and European tours for 2018.

Girls With Guns
La-ni Lithman~ Vocals
Christy Nishiyama~ Bass
Sophie Vogel~ Guitar
Trey Cobb~ Drums
-from San Francisco, CA

-La-ni Lithman is one of the bay areas truly fascinating underground figures.  The daughter of Philip Lithman-better known as Snakefinger, and known for his long time collaboration with the mysterious Residents-it took the former actress quite some time to quit worrying about her fathers shadow and come into her own musically.  But when she did, holy shit.  For the last seventeen years, Lithman's been fronting the punk outfit Girls with Guns, who sing, by her own admission, mostly about "cocks and sex and drugs." "I really wanted to go out there and rock as hard as the boys," she told me, "and look really cute doing it in a Betsey Johnson dress."  Mission accomplished! The girls (there is actually one guy) play a mixture of Lithmans originals and covers of songs by the Ramones, Bikini Kill, and ...Connie Francis?  Yep.  Lithmans musical mantra..."keep it simple and stupid".
