-“Ever wonder what a traditional lounge singer would sound like backed up by a punk band? The Smoking Popes take that concept one step further: They've created a unique kind of music that some listeners are describing as ‘hyperkinetic tear-jerkers’." Los Angeles Times

Bursting onto the Chicago punk scene in 1991, Smoking Popes built a relationship with their legion of fans by melding raw songs about bittersweet heartache with soaring melodies, power chords and infectious energy. From their early indie releases to their critically acclaimed major label albums, Smoking Popes developed a unique blend of buzzsaw guitars, caffeinated rhythms and heartfelt crooning vocals, combining the angst of punk with the smooth sophistication of Frank Sinatra, creating music both urgent and timeless, and influencing a generation of musicians in their wake.

These days, the Popes are tighter and more inspired than ever, having reunited with drummer Mike Felumlee, from the band’s seminal recordings of the ‘90s, to record their first new material with their original lineup since 1998, a powerful two-song single – “Simmer Down” and “Someday I’ll Smile Again” – now available on Asian Man Records. Lead singer Josh Caterer describes the reunion, “We’ve been fortunate to have some really great drummers over the years, they’ve all brought something unique to the band, but as soon as we started playing with Mike again, we felt like ‘This is how it’s supposed to be!’ Mike is the one who helped create our sound in the first place. Having him back in the band brings a lot of energy and excitement to what we’re doing.”

And that’s not their only reason to celebrate. 2017 marks the 20th anniversary of Destination Failure, the Popes’ pop-punk masterpiece, originally released on Capitol Records in 1997. To commemorate this milestone, they’re partnering with Side One Dummy Records to create a special vinyl edition of the album, due out in early 2018. Caterer remarked, “It’s sort of hard to believe that Destination Failure is twenty years old! Listening back to the album, it doesn’t feel dated to me. I think there’s an immediacy to the music that still comes through. A lot of that has to do with Jerry Finn. He was such a brilliant producer. We were very lucky to work with him.”

The band is also hard at work writing and arranging new material for a full-length album to be released in the fall of 2018. Look for some of those new songs to pop up in their live sets on the road this year. If their recent single is any indication, Smoking Popes are far from done making waves.

“Why are the Smoking Popes important? Because they’ve written your favorite song, whether you know it or not.” – Kyle Kinane, Comedian & Smoking Popes Superfan

Bad Cop / Bad Cop
Stacey Dee - Vocals/Guitar
Jennie Cotterill - Vocals/Guitar
Myra Gallarza - Drums
Linh Le - Bass/Vocals
-from SF-OC-LA/Peeedro!, CA

-“Shove your labels / we’ll flip your tables / and we won’t apologize / for causing a scene.” – Bad Cop/Bad Cop, My Life
The lyric above is essentially a mission statement for Bad Cop/Bad Cop, who prove that the best way to battle sexist stereotypes about women in bands is to play well, and to play hard.
With catchy hooks, three part harmonies, and a drummer who fires her guns harder than most of her male compatriots, Bad Cop/Bad Cop bring to mind the ‘90s heyday of chicks who actually rocked, from the snarl of The Distillers and synchronized vocals of Dance Hall Crashers to the guitar prowess of The Muffs and wry lyrics of Lunachicks.
All hailing from different parts of the U.S., the foursome met in Los Angeles while playing in bands like Compton SF, The Radio Sweetheart, The D’Maggs, The City, Angry Amputees, and Cunt Sparrer.  Eventually realizing that their combined talents and influences would be greater than the sum of their parts, they launched the band in 2011 and quickly became the big sisters of the DIY punk scene, about which Jennie says “We have been so lucky to participate in such a supportive, inclusive, and active scene [with] great people working together and encouraging each other.”
After playing at the “Lilith Bear” party during San Francisco Bear Pride 2013, they were supported and encouraged by an unlikely audience member: NOFX’s Fat Mike.  “After our set, Mike approached and said he liked all the songs and decided then that he was going to do something with our band.  I almost crapped myself, and the rest is history,” says Dee
With a self-released 7” in 2013, the “Boss Lady EP” released on Fat Wreck Chords made its way onto numerous top 10 lists in 2014. Their debut full-length arrived on FAT in 2015 and brazenly blasts out some of the most vibrant pop-punk around today. Laden with catchy hooks, three part harmonies that'd make The Beach Boys jealous, and tons of attitude, all 13 tracks showcase BAD COP/BAD COP's uncanny ability to blend aggressive instrumentation with polished vocals.

Daydream
Kyle Martin, Scott Goodrich, Travis Pacheco
-from Oakland, CA

-Hailing from Oakland, California, Kyle Martin, Scott Goodrich, and Travis Pacheco have been playing in bands together, apart and in different variations for years. However, after some time apart, some life changes, and even a near-fatal illness, the three musicians have come together to bring pop-punk band Daydream to fruition. They are melody-driven that is nostalgic in sound but fresh in flavor, with elements that bring you back to your favorite three-piece band from middle school but still get your head bobbing and your body moving.
