-The Jack Knives are an American rock band, formed in 2019. The band consists of British singer/songwriter Si Short (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Faris Muhtaseb (lead guitar, backing vocals), Gerardo Jimenez (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Hugo Arzola (drums, percussion).
Rooted in the punk rock sound, The Jack Knives write sincere, honest and passionate songs about love, life, death and romance. The band has stated its influences are wide and varied and this can be heard in the music. Songs like “New York City” give lyrical nods to artists like The Beastie Boys, The Pogues and Bob Dylan. Other songs give proud props to bands like The Gaslight Anthem and Social Distortion. Si Short said in a 2021 interview “I’ve seen people comment online that we are a punk rock band, I’ve also seen people get defensive of punk rock, and say we are not a punk band, honestly, we are just a rock n roll band. We are humbled and grateful that people listen and enjoy what we put out. We try to write songs that are catchy and lyrics that people can relate to”.
The band started life in Hawaii as a musical project called Si Short and the Jack Knives. During the COVID lock downs of 2020, the band recorded it’s first EP titled “Dancing with Demons”. The 7-track record was recorded in a studio apartment on the island of Oahu. Singer Si Short recounts “I had no idea how to record or mix a record, but I bought a little interface and just started recording ideas”. The result was a collection of sincere and passionate songs lamenting insecurity amongst optimism and romance. Stand out tracks from the EP include “Are You Alright?” and the title track “Dancing with Demons”. The record was quickly followed up by an acoustic 4 track EP called “Live Acoustic at Hakalau Studio” also recorded in the Hawaiian apartment.
The band quickly began gaining an online following on the back of these releases and relocated to Anaheim, California in 2022. Based on the messages and feedback from fans and social media followers, they began writing new songs. The result was the much-anticipated 2023 release “For the Lovers. For the Fighters.” This record, while still considered a home recorded demo, was a clear step up in quality and songwriting, while still capturing the raw emotion, sincerity and vulnerability of the older Jack Knives songs.
“For the Lovers. For the Fighters.” Was brilliantly received by the music media and fans of the band, with standout songs like “Kill Me First” and “Hope and Romance” being playlisted by numerous radio stations and curators including Jesea Lee of Sirius Radio’s Octane Show and Seattle’s Racketeer Radio.
The Jack Knives continue to write and are currently recording a new record that's being produced by Raul "Riff" Cuellar in Burbank, California. The band also has tour dates throughout the summer!
