Once the heat kicks in, there’s no other outcome but thermal shock and shattered glass. Since 2009, Oakland’s The Atom Age have been scattering slivers of imploded tubes all across the Bay Area. A rocket propelled ode to the unhinged power of ‘60s punk and R&B, the Age are more Sonics than Hives, and more Link Wray than Jack White. Coming to life out of the Bay’s punk scene, they’re a powder keg of a live band. But in the past, capturing this energy on record has proven a challenge. Over their last three albums, the Atom Age have documented their considerable strength for songwriting (most notably 2015’s Hot Shame), but something has almost always been lost in the equation of tracking and layering. Only now, thanks to the sympatico production work of Dave Schiffman (The Bronx, Pup, Jimmy Eat World) has the mutant fission of their live shows truly been captured on record. Blazing by in a relentless 25 minutes, Cry Til You Die is Atom Age at their most swaggeringly explosive, their pop craftsmanship fused inseparably to every skronking sax line and Farfisa wail. Lead single “Walk Through Walls,” with its stabbed keys and bleating saxophone, is less a walk than a drunken march across boundaries—a sauced night stroll which slams headlong into one of the band’s best riffs to date. “Bad Seeds,” sailing on a snaking surf riff, recalls the sleaze of early Tarantino soundtracks. Recorded live at District Recordings in San Jose, CA, every track on Cry Til You Die is slick with sweat, and coated in a fine layer of grime. From the leading howl in opener “Love is a Numbers Game” to the final shriek of feedback on the closing title track, this is The Atom Age at the top of their craft. As soon as the record begins, you’ll start to feel the heat. But be warned: once it builds, it doesn’t let up. By the end, there’s no other outcome. You might not implode, but you will Cry Til You Die!~ Mike Huguenor Miranda & The Beat -from Brooklyn, NY -In a small town in California, Miranda Zipse and Kim Sollecito started Miranda and The Beat, a bad girl duo with a penchant for penning hits. Miranda, a high school dropout at 15, had been working for her moms estate sale business going through dead people's belongings and making up melodies in her head as she went about it. After playing locally the two decided to visit New York City and tried their chops playing gigs around town. When their friends and local legends, The Mystery Lights, went on tour, the two shacked up in their apartment and simply decided never to leave. Giving up all their possessions and sacrificing a tawdry normal existence to lead a true path of illuminated rock n’roll. Kim and Miranda shared a bed, looking for work and honing their craft. They met their Farfisa player Dylan Fernandez when he delivered weed to a guy Miranda was dating at the time in their apartment. A few years later they added Dylan’s little brother, Alvin Jackson on bass after the departure of Kate Gutwald. The band played around New York City mixing their witchcraft with true gut wrenching RnB and writing what would become their debut album. In 2022 they finally left the big city and toured 7 fun filled weeks in every nook, cranny and butthole of the US and Canada with The King Khan and BBQ Show. After losing a tooth and a few broken bones later, the band is now ready for the world to hear their self-titled debut album on King Khan’s Khannibalism label. It Is hot and spicy with tracks like Sweat, glorifying hangover sweats “all up in your crack.” Mixed and with production by Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, their debut album is a hallucinogenic ode to the cannon of soul, garage punk, pure RnB and utter mayhem. “I never thought I would see someone be able to play guitar with the ferocity of Link Wray, and sing like Lydia Lunch had a nuclear meltdown and morphed into Etta James and Yma Sumac. Miranda in the Beat ARE the quintessential heirs to our rock n’ roll throne… May the circle remain unbroken. Consider the torch has not only been passed but its fiery tale is ready to set the whole world on fire all over again.” - King Khan “Emperor of RnB” The Dead Seagals -from Tahoe City, CA -Dead Seagals is surf influenced garage rock from Tahoe City, CA. Taking notes from bands like Shannon & The Clams, Black Lips, and The Sonics, Dead Seagals ride the line between 'Surfin' Bird' and 'Where Eagles Dare'. They released their debut EP in August 2023. Dead Seagals have shared the stage with La Luz, Meatbodies, Shannon & The Clams, and many more. |
