A musical fundraiser to support Potrero Hill's Food Pantry The Food Pantry is an all-volunteer organization which nourishes hundreds of SF households and is struggling to meet the challenges of these times We are celebrating 25 years making us not only one of the longest operating food pantries, but also one of the very largest in San Francisco! When we launched our program in 2000, we served only 35 families...now we serve over 500 households + dozens of unhoused~SROs each Saturday at our weekly food distribution. We are a 100% volunteer driven organization. The Food Pantry isn’t funded by the church where we are located in Potrero Hill or by grants, but is supported by an all-volunteer staff and donations from individuals and small businesses, along with partnerships from the SFM Food Bank & Extra Food. We're proud of the way that our community has responded in these challenging times and are always in need of more support to help those facing food insecurity. Our mission of The Food Pantry at St. Gregory of Nyssa Church, San Francisco, transcends any political or social divisions. We operate with one fundamental truth: every one of our neighbors needs nourishment to survive and thrive. Our work is guided by a set of core values that are rooted in our collective belief in the inherent dignity of all people-regardless of race, religion, beliefs, background, or circumstances. Secret Emchy Society -from Oakland, CA -From the first notes of the lead-off track to Secret Emchy Society’s new album, Gold Country / Country Gold, you realize that you’re not in Kansas anymore. It’s a gothy, spaghetti western version of “Cowboys Are Frequently, Secretly Fond Of Each Other,” written by Latin country musician Ned Sublette but popularized by Willie Nelson. It’s also widely recognized as the first LGBT-themed mainstream country song by a major artist. Par for the course if you know Cindy Emch’s previous work. As the First Lady of Queer Country, she is known for her distinct voice and ability to blend Americana, California Country, Hellbilly, Goth, and Honky Tonk, spinning radically distinctive tales from her singular perspective. Emchy’s not only a highly regarded musician in the Bay Area—nominated three times for Best Local LGBT Band by Bay Area Reporter—but she’s also a seasoned student of the history of LGBTQA musicians dipping their toes in genres that have always been “off-limits” for non-hetero participants. She was the founding editor of Country Queer and still hosts Gimme Country’s popular Emchy’s Outlaw Americana show. She’s also worked with the original queer country cowboy Lavender Country, the award-winning singer-songwriter Amythyst Kiah (from the all-women-of-color supergroup Our Native Daughters), out transwoman folk-punker Shawna Virago, and Haitian-born / UK based Alt-Americana Country-Noire singer DeLila Black when Emchy produced the 2021 National Queer Arts Festival Showcase. Her previous albums have landed her on the road with some of the most popular acts in the genre: Mercy Bell, Sarah Shook & the Disarmers, and Karen & The Sorrows, led by the originator of the Gay Ole Opry herself, Karen Pittleman. Needless to say, Cindy Emch has become well-known to anyone paying attention to the increasing popularity of turning old tropes on their ear by melding classic twang with a punk ethos. Emchy’s first taste of music was from her mother, who played standards on accordion. She grew up with a love for Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits, but when she hit her 20s, a college radio show introduced her to country legends like Yoakam, Cash, and Lucinda Williams. Throw in partiality to a smattering of post-punk bands like X and Black Flag, and it’s easy to see what led Emchy to the Bay Area in 1995, where she honed her sound when she co-founded two well-regarded punk-country bands, Vagabondage and Rhubarb Whiskey. After cutting her teeth as a side player for years, it was a lucky accident one night when she ended up at the front of the stage, taking the reins to act as bandleader, only to realize that was where she had belonged all along. Emchy’s music, created with her longtime band Secret Emchy Society, has been compared to songwriters like Ray Davies, Marijohn Wilkin, John D. Loudermilk, and Cowboy Jack Clement, who wrote the early hits for African-American country pioneer Charley Pride. SES’s debut album, 2017’s The Stars Fell Shooting Into Twangsville, swings beautifully from accordion-drenched waltzes to slow ballads to high-tempo roof shakers with lyrics soaked in long-standing country tropes, from day-drinking to painful love to oversized ambitions. It was followed by 2019’s Mark’s Yard, a sparsely recorded collection of cover versions from singular songwriters like Tom Waits and Hank Williams Jr. In 2020 she released The Chaser, a classic honky-tonk album both dark and light, ominous and joyous. It landed her positive coverage in No Depression, Wide Open Country, Ditty TV, NPR, The Boot, and Americana Highways, just to name a few. So, where to go from there? Well, more GUITAR, of course, to amp up her shitkicker attitude. Up until the pandemic, Emchy has been an acoustic guitar devotee, and she still plays some acoustic guitar on the album, but Gold Country / Country Gold could just as easily be named “Secret Emchy Society Goes Electric.” Emchy also collaborated with artists like queer country crooner Paisley Fields and trans musician Mya Byrne on “I Wish I Was in Texas,” and recorded a version of drag and burlesque performer Jbird McLaughlin’s “My Old Flame.” Along with their new electrified sound comes lyrics that speak to longing, wishing, loneliness, and nostalgia for friends and loved ones to be around. It also reckons with the social upheaval that came with the pandemic years, bringing into focus a community that Emchy says she always assumed would be there for her. “The fact that I was watching a lot of these wonderful, independent dive bars that I love so much struggling and other artists working really hard to adapt and trying hard to stay connected with each other really affected me,” she explains. Gold Country / Country Gold was recorded in May 2021 in Twain Harte, CA, in the heart of Gold Country. Emchy rented a cabin on a lake before the summer season began, resulting in a neighborhood of mostly empty rustic cabins, enabling the band to be as loud as they wanted to get. The original plan was for their usual producer and album lead guitarist, Tolan McNeil, to fly down from Canada to play and engineer the record. Three days before the recording was set to begin, it became clear that McNeil was not going to make it across the Canadian border to meet up with the rest of the band. Armed with a double Virgo’s dedication and a non-touring musician’s stubbornness, with lots of research help from her wife, Emchy and her merry band of musicians figured out what gear they needed to still make the album happen. A few new credit card bills and some serious generosity later, they had a functional 11-channel interface, a computer strong enough to run it, and used Zoom to have McNeil, and her other collaborators, sit in on the recording process. The result is Secret Emchy Society’s best work to date. As soon as you hear Emchy’s big, boisterous voice, it’s easy to be drawn in as she uses her rich tone to color lyrics about drinkin’, dancin’, and lovin’. Gold Country / Country Gold is an album that’s as rowdy as it is vulnerable, as loud as it is quiet. All the emotions Emchy felt, as her life as a musician turned upside down during the pandemic, were embraced then put back into the world in song. It’s a hell of a ride, and everyone is invited to the party. Jimmy Touzel -from Georgetown, SC -With his glamorous custom western suit, soaring tenor vocals and vintage 6-string bass guitar with surf inspired twang, Jimmy Touzel has crafted a unique concept album and signature solo country act. His latest release, Lonesome Lullabies Vol. II, was released in the spring of 2025 by Belle Isle Records and to much fanfare. Drawing on influences such as 50’s rock, spaghetti westerns, David Lynch's Twin Peaks, and the 1960’s Nashville Sound, Lonesome Lullabies is drenched in plate reverb, tremolo, and slap back delay. These vibes and sounds of the 50’s and 60’s helped Jimmy paint a picture with Lonesome Lullabies that is dreamy, ethereal, stripped down and sad. Early reactions to the album have drawn comparisons to Eddie Arnold, Elliot Smith, Ennio Morricone, Link Wray, and Ricky Nelson. In addition to his work as a solo artist, Jimmy has been a mainstay in the San Francisco Bay Area’s traditional American music scene for the past 20 years. Playing upright bass, electric bass, tuba, clarinet, and sax, he specializes in traditional bluegrass, traditional jazz, hot jazz, Django jazz, old time, rockabilly, classic country, and western swing. In addition to numerous music and film recordings on the upright bass fiddle, electric bass guitar, clarinet, sax, tuba, and guitar, Jimmy has toured coast-to-coast at home in the US, as well as performances in Canada, Holland, France, Belgium, Costa Rica, and Russia. He has performed live on stage with groups of note, such as the Earl Brothers, Gaucho, the Stylistics, Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs, Evanescence, Lindsey Sterling, the Brothers Comatose, Jackie Gore, and the Tams. Mr. Touzel also has a passion for performing classical music on the clarinet. Before moving to the Bay Area, he held the Bass Clarinet chair in the Symphony Orchestra Augusta (GA) and the 2nd/Eb Clarinet position in the Long Bay (Myrtle Beach, SC) Symphony. Additionally, he played with the Wilmington (NC) Symphony and the Aspen Festival Orchestra. Jimmy has performed under the batons of many of the worlds leading conductors such as David Zinman, James Dupriest, Julius Rudel, Michael Stern, and Damon Gupton. He attended the Aspen Music Festival where he studied with Bass Clarinet legend Dennis Smylie. Originally from Georgetown, South Carolina, Jimmy earned his Bachelor of Music Performance from the University of South Carolina where he studied clarinet with Doug Graham, jazz bass with Jim Mings, and jazz with Bert Ligon. Past clarinet studies also include: Carey Bell, Jerome Simas, Ted Gurch, Mark Brandon, and Gloria Campione. Past bass teachers have included Ken Miller, Djordje Stijepovic, Craig Butterfield, and Reggie Sullivan. An educator himself, Mr. Touzel is a member of the instrumental music faculty at the Oakland School for the Arts, where he teaches classes in classical, jazz, rock, and music history. Never one to forget the glory of being a teenage child and learning how to play the electric bass in the 90’s, Mr. T still loves to turn it up loud and rock it hard, should the circumstances call for it. The Sam Chase -from San Francisco, CA -Sam Chase is a complete phony. From his gruff-voiced affectation to his “man in black” wannabe style, you might get the impression that this man may know a thing or two about a life lived on the outskirts of civil society. You’d be wrong, but you wouldn’t be the first sucker that Samuel has fooled. It’s his ability to rip off so many artists that keeps him from being found out, hiding in plain sight while mixing the intellectual properties of better and more successful artists into his own signature (albeit unoriginal) songwriting style. A fraud in the highest order, Samuel has traveled from town to town across the world like a door to door salesman, peddling plastic smile snake oil songs and insincere stories that pretend to delve deep into the human experience. Like any good con man, he has the ability, perhaps through his devilish charm, sharp wit, or deep sociopathic need for power and control, to lull his listeners into a trance like submission. They hang onto every word as if it were the midnight gospel of a messianic troubadour, here on earth for only a short while to bring depth and vibrance to a near-sighted and monochromatic world. It’s hard to fathom how he has managed to maintain a career for so long, having played music consistently since his teens. You’d think the stress of being “found out” as a charlatan would eventually push him into a career more fitting of his skill set and intellect, like a parking lot attendant, or bowling alley shoe disinfecter. However, it’s his rabid fan base that won’t let him be an honest member of society. The fact that good people, honest, hard working, god fearing red blooded Americans could be duped by such a blatantly unoriginal and inauthentic “songwriter” is one of the great mysteries that will perhaps someday be solved by some other songwriter who is actually worth a damn. – Hunter S Thompson Country Risqué -from San Francisco, CA -Country Risqué- "America's Riskiest Country Band", helmed by singer-songwriters Miles Gordon and Daniel Bromfield, lives by a direct and pure mission statement: “classic honky-tonk, modern values.” The songwriters met in Eugene, Oregon in 2012 and upon finding themselves both in San Francisco, recruited Richard Moog (lead guitar) and Tomas Georgiou (drums) to round out the band. Their first official single is due out December 1, 2023 with their debut album to be released in early 2024 on Rocks in Your Head Records. Defined by the coffee-and-chocolate contrast of Miles Gordon’s rich, formally trained vocals and romantic lyrics with Bromfield’s dark humor and deadpan singing style, Country Risqué explores queer love and latter-day disillusionment in the language of classic tear-in-my-beer honky-tonk music. They packed clubs and street fairs with fans from all music tribes. The Beastie Boys were visably more than a bit apprehensive about following them as opening band in SF as were every touring headliner they opened for. MCM helped pioneer rock/rap with a skate punk core but were much harder rocking and both more unabashedly obscence and widely relatable lyrically than any other band of the genre. They were San Francisco's ultimate party band and were courted by both major labels such as Warner Bros. and big booking agents such as Bill Graham Presents, however, they showed little respect for opportunities ('cos rock n roll) and didn't bother to release their first record until '93 (Gasatanka/Dutch East). By then the genre's popularity had long since peaked. MCM have played special events in recent years such as the benefit for I-Beam booker Eddie Jennings at The Regency Ballroom, SF in 2015. MCM have since been on a men's retreat. Boneless Ones instagram.com/bonelessones -from Berkeley, CA -Inspired by Thrasher Magazine's Skate Rock tapes and driven by many skate related bands of the time, such as the Big Boys, JFA, and Code of Honor, they went on the full assault as one of the premier California punk/crossover bands and left every stage and city in waste that they played in. In 1986 The Boneless Ones recorded four songs with Kevin Army. We were getting ready for our follow-up to Skate for the Devil and thought a four-song tease would be fun. Those were the days when you put songs out on cassette. So that is what we did. We broke up before we ever recorded that next record. When we got back together 31 years later we did not have those songs anymore. We had Church of Violence on a skate video but no record of the other three. Then when cleaning out a closet Troy found a cassette marked ’87 Demo. These are the four songs recorded long ago. We are going to make it available to the public on April 2, 2024. Here you go.
