A well-regarded metal guitarist who came up during the rise of the thrash-metal scene in San Francisco during the early '80s, Soderlund was raised in a musical family (both his parents played jazz) and picked up the six-string at the age of nine. By 1984, he had been invited to join then fledgling thrash outfit Mordred before eventually striking out on to found Mercenary with Mordred guitarist Danny White. While Mercenary would only play a couple of gigs and record a demo in 1986 during it's initial existence before imploding, the group achieved a sort of legendary status locally and in Europe as their demo was shared between metal fans. Söderlund would also work in the music industry as a roadie and guitar tech, working extensively with Exodus at local shows and touring with Megadeth. As the '80s turned into the '90s, Söderlund played guitar in a number of projects (Exterminator, Morticious and Mercyful Fate tribute Hail Satan) as well as a stint in Laaz Rockit. Later, he would participate in an onstage reunion with Mercenary in the early 2000s and live performances with Mordred and Heathen. Though Mercenary would reform as an active group in 2007, more recently the musician decided to try his hand at the music he heard his parents playing during his youth. The singer and his group celebrated the release of their debut CD with an outdoor concert at the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater in McLaren Park a few years ago, drawing a big crowd to enjoy an afternoon of classic standards, Sinatra deep cuts, a song written by his composer mother and even a nod to his hard-rock roots with a swinging take on the Thin Lizzy hit "Dancing in the Moonlight." In the fall of 2021, the band returned to the stage for it's first public performance in over a year, drawing a large crowd for a free Saturday afternoon concert at the Golden Gate Park bandshell. Söderlund is preparing to release his sophomore album that will feature more standards, a rock hit, an R&B tune and an original song. Last year, the lead single for the album -- a version of Neil Diamond's classic hit "Love on the Rocks" -- becomes available on all digital streaming platforms. The album is currently planned for September release. The song was recorded at San Francisco's Hyde St. Studios with engineer and producer Jamieson Durr (who has worked with Sammy Hagar, Joe Satriani, Don Felder of the Eagles, Nancy Wilson and Wyclef Jean), before the finished track was mastered in London at iconic Abbey Road Studios by Andy Walter (David Bowie, Jimmy Page, U2, Coldplay, Radiohead). By Dave Pehling for CBS News Val Holly & the Wanderers -from the Bay Area, CA -Val Holly and The Wanderers was formed during the pandemic by Rhythm Guitarist/Vocalist, Aaron Barrett as a tribute to the music of Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens. Aaron recruited fellow band members Chris Lawson- Drums, Paul Simmans-Lead Guitar, and David Rosenthal-Bass to round out what has turned into a 50's tribute to many other legends of the day, such as Eddie Cochran, Dion, The Everly Brothers, Link Wray, Santo and Johnny and more. Having played El Rio, Great American Music Hall, The Make Out Room, Retro Junkie and more, lookout for Val Holly and The Wanderers at live music venues around the Bay Area for a Rockin' Good Time! Emery Villains -from Emeryville, CA -Emery Villains formed in 2019. Started by Scott Holderby (lead vocals and guitar) with Rhoda Jean Steen (vocals and guitar). The Carolina Drifters from the 50's, featuring Rhoda and her brothers Paul and Clarence were the backup band for the Black Jack Wayne Show on channel 2, backing Johnny Cash, Buck Owens and others. Rhoda Jean Steen's presence serves as a direct link to the roots of rockabilly and the Carolina Drifters' contributions to the genre. Her participation with Emery Villains is a beautiful blend of past and present, ensuring the music's legacy continues. Scott looked over to his guitar player Danny White (vocals and lead guitar) from Mordred to do the finger picking. Scott then turned to a high school friend, Hank Alva (vocals and upright bass) to round out the groove of the tunes. That's absolutely right! Emery Villains is a great example of a modern band keeping the rockabilly sound alive and fresh for a new generation of fans. They're part of a newer wave of rockabilly bands that are blending traditional sounds with modern energy and style. Bands like Emery Villains, and others like Brian Setzer, Reverend Horton Heat, and Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys, are all helping to carry the torch for rockabilly music, while also pushing the genre forward with their own unique twists and interpretations. It's great to see rockabilly's legacy living on through these bands, and introducing the music to new fans who may not have been born when the genre first emerged. They're keeping the spirit of rockabilly alive, with its signature blend of country, blues, and early rock 'n' roll, while also making it relevant and exciting for contemporary audiences. Emery Villains, in particular, has a great sound that blends classic rockabilly with a modern edge. Their music has a high-energy feel that's perfect for dancing, and their lyrics often have a fun, tongue-in-cheek vibe that's reminiscent of the genre's early days. |
