Accessory -from Chicago, IL -Accessory is the solo moniker of Jason Balla, a fixture of the Chicago music scene for over a decade. In between the busy schedule of his main project Dehd, Balla devotes himself to self-recorded experiments that land somewhere between Women, Broadcast and John Cale. Following the cassette release Blue Tape (2018) came a string of singles– “Eyes for Berlin” (2020), “Together” (2020), a collaboration with Bnny, and in 2023, “Wherever You Are Tonight.” On Wherever Balla threads the needle between bedroom pop intimacy and noise-fueled anthem. The same pop sensibility you’d expect from Dehd is present, only it’s more damaged. “There’s a freedom I get from writing only for myself,” says Balla, “I can be beautiful. I can be ugly. I can be anything.” The outfit assembled to realize his music on the stage is a who’s who of the Chicago underground including members of Deeper, ULNA, Desert Liminal and Eli Schmitt of New Now. As an 8 person ensemble the group weave concise pop songs into more explorative interludes that range from walls of sound to a whisper. Over the pummeling beat of multiple drummers, the band fills the air with dusty tones and feedback as Balla croons of lonely worlds and missed opportunities. Facing -from Vincent, KS -Nathan Whitman is a multi-instrumentalist from the great state of Kansas. He released two solo albums under the moniker "west/step" while residing in Pittsburgh, PA. In 2021, he moved to Chicago to pursue more musical collaborations. Kirk Rawlings grew up in Memphis, TN playing and touring in bands as a singer-songwriter starting in his early 20's. Years later he created the art-collage rock duo Courtesy with fellow Memphian Drew Ryan and the two moved to Chicago. After 10 years of Courtesy, Kirk started a solo project called Beige On Beige and began looking for bandmates. He met bass player Nathan Whitman through Craigslist and the two started trading music. Kirk was blown away by some of Nathan's compositions and suggested they start a new band based on those. Kirk, wanting to concentrate on writing and not sing in another band, the pair decided to look for a singer. Claudia Ferme is a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist from Chicago, IL. She started a band called Her Again while in Bloomington, IN for college. Upon graduation and her move back to Chicago she started making music under Claude, a dream pop, lyrically focused project about early to mid 20's malaise and self-exploration. In early 2023 Claudia Ferme answered an ad posted by Kirk on IG. Having played a show together and briefly working with him once before on a previously released Courtesy track, they were familiar with each other's music. Claudia was excited by the influences listed for this new project and was looking for a fresh start musically. Kirk and Nate started sending her instrumentals they had made and she would send back voice memos of lyrics and melodies that could work for these tracks. Nathan, Kirk and Claudia landed on the name Facing and have been creating together since. |
