For TRICLOPS!, the short-lived (late 2005 - early 2010) but notorious acid-noise-prog-punk-post-hardcore outfit, "freakish" was a desirable trait. Tweaked out on the exhilarating paranoia typical of the USA in the 00's, TRICLOPS! combined distorted/effected vocals, oscillating bass lines, and jittery guitars to form a nervous, seasick swath over alternatingly throbbing and explosive drums; a polarizing, asymmetric and unsettling response to both a burning world and the dull indie-dominated complacency of the late-aughts music scene. TRICLOPS! songs unfurl into worlds of their own with byzantine lyrics--the Frantz Fanon-esque plot of an indigenous cop-turned-assassin of a colonial viceroy (sung in a neo-Melanesian creole) in one song, a bittersweet ode to the botfly (a tropical parasite) in another--while the music explores wide dynamic variations in tone and urgency. During their brief lifespan, TRICLOPS! released a rapid-fire blizzard of albums and EPs on labels like ALTERNATIVE TENTACLES (both full-length albums), GOLD STANDARD LABS (including the final release on that legendary label), SICK ROOM, and MISSING FINGER - the latter two of which co-released the acclaimed debut EP "Cafeteria Brutalia" in 2006, playing one of the record release shows at the beloved Bottom of the Hill 20 years ago this Fall right around guitarist Christian Beaulieu's October 12th birthday, both events that the band is celebrating with this one-time-only reunion gig. Noted for its over-the-top live show, in which singer John No frequently ventured into the audience covered in liquids and with flashlights taped all over his body, TRICLOPS! extensively toured the United States and Europe with like-minded weirdos such as JESUS LIZARD, MELT BANANA, THE LOCUST, MURDER CITY DEVILS, THE MELVINS, ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE, MEAT PUPPETS, HELLA, DON CABALLERO, XBXRX, SONIC BOOM, RED FANG, BIG BUSINESS, LIGHTNING BOLT, 400 BLOWS, NOMEANSNO and many more. Since TRICLOPS! ceased playing in 2010, the members have kept busy with ANYWHERE (Cedric Bixler-Zavala/Mike Watt/Christian Beaulieu), JELLO BIAFRA+GUANTANAMO SCHOOL OF MEDICINE, STREET EATERS, VICTIM'S FAMILY, FLESHIES, TERRY GROSS, VERTICAL SCRATCHERS, PINS OF LIGHT, THE ENEMIES, and other loud things. Wife -from San Francisco, CA -Wife is a San Francisco band formed in 2021, rooted in San Francisco’s DIY music scene. Their music—a desperate, dramatic punk jitter full of howl and laughter and breath-stealing jolts—draws on the memories built through house shows in the Sunset, volunteer shifts at Adobe Books, and the collective happenings of Outhouse. In the band’s own words, “We like to have fun, and emphasize play and weirdness!” This performance coincides with the release of Wife’s album The Importance of Daydreaming, released on vinyl by Recess Records and on cassette by Cherub Dream Records. Gumby's Junk -from Oakland, CA -Oakland-based art rock band Gumby’s Junk began in 2018 as a complete mishap. Pushing musical surrealism to its limits with outrageous harmonies, circus-fast riffs, and a genre-defying mishmash, they have been described as oblique, colorful madness—like running fast while looking at the ground. |
